Introduction to Department of Kuzhanthai & Mahalir Maruthuvam
Welcome to the Department of Kuzhanthai & Mahalir Maruthuvam
This department is one of the eight departments within the BSMS degree program at the Faculty of Siddha Medicine at the University of Jaffna. The department encompasses two interrelated clinical disciplines: Kuzhanthai Maruthuvam, Mahalir Maruthuvam, and Mahappettiyal. These areas collectively address the health needs of children and women, reflecting the siddha system’s holistic approach to human wellbeing.
About The Department
The Department of Kuzhanthai and Mahalir Maruthuvam, is responsible for teaching three core subjects: Kuzhanthai Maruthuvamum (Paediatrics) for Fourth BSMS students, and Mahalir Maruthuvam (Gynaecology) and Mahappetiyal (Obstetrics) for Final BSMS students. The department provides undergraduate students with knowledge and practical skills in the promotion of health, prevention of disease, and the diagnosis, treatment, and management of health conditions affecting children and women. The existing curriculum encompasses child health, nutrition, paediatric disorders, gynaecological conditions, reproductive health, Healthy pregnancy and maternal health, with particular emphasis on antenatal and postnatal care.
In addition, the teaching programme integrates traditional Siddha medical concepts, diagnostic methods, therapeutic procedures, and relevant ethical and legal aspects of clinical practice. Through this approach, students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies required for professional healthcare delivery.
Looking ahead, the department envisions the establishment of a professorial unit at the siddha Teaching Hospital in Kaithady dedicated to the two specialties: Kuzhanthai Maruthuvam and Mahalir Maruthuvam.
