Introduction​ IRCSM 2027

The Indigenous System of Medicine in Sri Lanka consists of Siddha, Ayurveda Unani, and traditional system of medicine. Siddha Medicine is one of the oldest and revealed system of the traditional medical system of Tamils which came through the Dravidian culture in the period of the Indus valley civilization. The history of Siddha Medicine revealed that it is established through Guru parambarai system begins with Lord Shiva (Uruthira Parambarai). Sage Agasthiyar disseminated this knowledge through the Siddhar Parambarai to all the human being in ancient time. Now Siddha Medicine is one of the recognized traditional medical systems of Indigenous Medicine in Sri Lanka.

The First Siddha Ayurveda Medical College was established by Mr. J. Bastiampillai in 1925 at Jaffna. This system was established along with Ayurveda and Unani Systems of Medicine in 1977 at University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. At the request of Tamil educationalists, the Siddha section was transferred to University of Jaffna from the IIM, University of Colombo on 2 nd of July 1984 as a Department under the Faculty of Arts. The Department of Siddha Medicine commenced its academic functions at Kaithady. The Department of Siddha Medicine became as a separate Unit under the direct administration of the Vice Chancellor since 1 st October 1993. The Board of Management to the Unit of Siddha Medicine was established in 2003 to make recommendations to the Vice Chancellor on matters pertaining to academic, administration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction and student welfare. The Unit of Siddha Medicine was upgraded as a Faculty of Siddha Medicine on July 2024 with eight departments. The Faculty is producing competent Siddha Graduates who are employed as Lecturers in the Universities and Medical Officers in Siddha Ayurvedic Hospitals in Sri Lanka.

First National Research Conference and Exhibition on Indigenous Medicine (NRCEIM) was conducted in 2017 followed by 1 st International Conference and Exhibition on Siddha Proposal for 4 th International Research Conference on Siddha Medicine 2027 Medicine (1 st ICESM) on 2018, 2 nd International Conference and Exhibition on Siddha Medicine (2 nd IRCESM) on 2020, and 3 rd International Conference and Exhibition on Siddha Medicine (3 rd IRCSM) on 2022 under the Jaffna University International Research Conferences (Juice) were organized at the Unit of Siddha Medicine. All of conferences were organized jointly with the Department of Indigenous Medicine, Northern Province.

The staff of Faculty of Siddha Medicine have decided to conduct 4 th International Research Conference on Siddha Medicine in 25 th – 29 th January 2027. This conference will include pre-conference workshop for four days from 25 th to 28 th January 2027 and one day conference on 29 th January 2027. The pre-conference workshop disseminates the knowledge in different fields by explaining through sharing experiences and clinical demonstration. The conference will provide a platform for enhancement of the knowledge and dissemination of the research findings of the Students, Siddha Physicians and Academics from different fields. Further, it will help to strengthen and collaborate with Traditional physicians and Researchers who are in National and International Universities.
