World Animal Day Programme – 2026

The World Animal Day Programme – 2026 was successfully held on 29th October 2026 at the Auditorium, Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna. The programme was organized by the Jeevaeyal Division, Department of Gunapadam, Faculty of Siddha Medicine, under the theme “Medicinal Significance of Biodiversity and the Welfare of Living Creatures.”

The event aimed to create awareness of the nutritional, medicinal, and traditional significance of animals and animal-derived products in Siddha medicine, while emphasizing animal welfare, biodiversity conservation, and public health.

The programme was attended by approximately 120 participants, including distinguished guests, Siddha Community Medical Officers, academic staff, school teachers, school students, BSMS students, and members of the community. The inaugural ceremony featured traditional activities, followed by addresses from the Dean of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine, the Head of the Department of Gunapadam, and distinguished guests.

A major highlight was the academic presentation by students of the 41st Batch of the Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS) programme. The presentations explored the medicinal and nutritional importance of birds, animals, meat, milk, honey, and fish in traditional Siddha healthcare. Special emphasis was placed on the correct identification and authentication of animal species, safe utilization of animal-derived medicinal materials, and prevention of zoonotic diseases.

An educational exhibition featuring traditional medicinal specimens, including Muthu Chippi, Palakarai, Maan Kombu, Paambu Settai, and Sangu, together with photographs of various animal and bird species, provided valuable practical learning opportunities.

The programme successfully promoted awareness of biodiversity, traditional Siddha knowledge, responsible utilization of natural resources, animal welfare, and environmental conservation. It also strengthened academic and community engagement through interactive educational activities.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all distinguished guests, participants, organizers, academic staff, and students who contributed to its success.
