Practical Demonstration of First Aid

Target Group: Final BSMS Students (Academic Year 2023/2024)

Time: 8.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m

Venue: Siddha Auditorium, Faculty of Siddha Medicine

The Department of Sirorogam and Aruvai Maruthuvam organized a Practical Demonstration of First Aid for the Final BSMS students (Academic Year 2023/2024) as part of the Aruvai Maruthuvam curriculum. The programme was conducted with the objective of enhancing students’ theoretical knowledge and practical competencies in providing immediate first aid during medical emergencies. The sessions were facilitated by qualified trainers Mr. S.Eelanesan, Assistant District Commissioner, Senior First Aid Trainer, St. John Ambulance,Jaffna and his team.

The objectives of the programme were to:

• Enhance students’ knowledge of first aid principles.
• Develop practical skills required for emergency first aid management.
• Improve confidence in responding to common medical and trauma emergencies.
• Prepare students to provide appropriate pre-hospital emergency care until definitive medical treatment is available.

The training programme consisted of theoretical sessions followed by practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice. The following topics were covered:

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• First Aid Management of Choking
• First Aid for Burns
• First Aid Management in Road Traffic Accidents (RTA)
• Management of Fractures and Dislocations
• Bleeding Control and Haemorrhage Management
• Management of Giddiness, Fainting (Syncope), and Epileptic Seizures

At the completion of the programme, students were able to:

• Demonstrate correct CPR techniques.
• Perform appropriate first aid for choking victims.
• Provide immediate management of burn injuries.
• Apply first aid principles in road traffic accident scenarios.
• Immobilize fractures and manage suspected dislocations.
• Control external bleeding using appropriate first aid techniques.
• Recognize and manage common medical emergencies such as syncope and epileptic seizures.
• Work effectively as a team during emergency situations.

The programme received positive feedback from the participants. Students appreciated the interactive teaching methods, practical demonstrations, and opportunities for hands- on practice. The training improved their confidence in managing emergency situations
and reinforced the importance of prompt first aid in reducing morbidity and preventing complications.

The Practical Demonstration of First Aid was successfully conducted with the active participation of 74 Final BSMS students. The programme effectively strengthened students’ theoretical knowledge and practical competencies in emergency first aid. The Department of Sirorogam and Aruvai Maruthuvam expresses its sincere appreciation to St. John Ambulance, Jaffna, particularly Mr. S.
